The Wave of Side Jobs in Japan: Lessons for Taiwan
For decades, Japanese companies strictly prohibited employees from engaging in side jobs. Most employment regulations explicitly stated that workers were not allowed to take on additional work, citing the need to focus on one’s primary role and avoid conflicts of interest or overwork. This rule was closely tied to Japan’s tradition of lifetime employment, where employees were expected to dedicate their careers to a single company. Yet with the rapid aging of the population and a shrinking labor force, the logic behind these restrictions became increasingly difficult to sustain.
